Strawberry French Toast

It’s everything you love about classic French toast… but even better because it’s topped with a killer fresh strawberry syrup and melting whipped cream.

Seriously, it’s so tasty you don’t even need maple syrup! Although I wouldn’t blame you if you always put it on the table

What is strawberry and cream French toast?

When I was looking for ideas for this recipe, I noticed that almost every strawberry French toast recipe contains some sort of strawberry French toast. And while I love strawberries and cream cheese in something like a cheesecake… I really had no desire to eat a strawberry cream cheese mixture stuffed into my French toast. No judgment, just not my thing!

Instead, I wanted to honor traditional French toast and just make it a little better. So I started with an easy French toast recipe and used that as my starting point! From there, I added a little brown sugar and a little Grand Marnier. These two little idiots give the French toast an incredible flavor!

And then, of course, top it with strawberries and cream! And voila! You have strawberries and cream French toast!

Strawberry syrup

Then I developed a sweet and sticky strawberry sauce that is truly divine! I guarantee you’ll want to make it for your waffles and pancakes too! It’s really quite simple to make. Basically, you brown some butter, then add sugar, orange juice and sliced strawberries. You’ll cook that for a bit, then add a little water and cornstarch which will help thicken everything up. Finally, you’ll add another pinch of grand marnier.

Homemade whipped cream

Whipped cream is so easy to make at home and tastes a million times better than anything you’ll get from a tub, tube or spray can! You can make it up to 30 minutes ahead of time and put it in the fridge.
To make it, simply add the cream, sugar and vanilla to a bowl and mix. Then beat with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form! Yes, it’s that easy!

French Toast Pro Tips:

  1. Use a combination of whole eggs and egg yolks. I know someone will be tempted to skip this and use all whole eggs, but don’t! My unique egg mixture creates soft, tender toast that doesn’t taste like eggs!
  2. The easiest way to dip bread slices is to pour the egg mixture into a shallow bowl or pie plate. Just be sure to use a larger bowl, as a small bowl won’t allow you to dip several pieces of bread at once.
  3. Get your pan hot and buttered before adding the French toast. I like to start with a tablespoon of butter and add more as needed. The butter will give you that golden brown exterior, so don’t be stingy. This is French toast after all, so it’s not the place to worry about a little more saturated fat.
  4. Don’t overcook! I find that 2-3 minutes on each side is the perfect time for me, but keep an eye on your toast. It’s ready to flip when the belly is golden brown!
  5. If your syrup is ready before the French toast, you can remove from the heat, then reheat over medium-low heat until hot again.
  6. To keep the French toast slices warm, preheat your oven to 200 degrees. Place the cooked French toast slices on a baking sheet and place in the oven while you continue to bake.

Begin the Strawberry Cream French Toast Recipe

For the brioche French toast:

Melt a few tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

In a large shallow bowl or pie plate, whisk the eggs and egg yolks until well combined. Add the cinnamon, nutmeg and sugars and whisk until well combined. Finally, add the milk, heavy cream, vanilla and grand marnier.

Dip each brioche slice into the egg mixture, making sure both sides are well coated.

Place the brioche slices in the pan and cook until the underside is golden, about 3 minutes.

Flip and continue cooking the other side until it is also golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes more.

Continue with all the golden browns, adding more butter to the pan as needed.

Serve warm, with strawberry coulis and whipped cream!

For the strawberry sauce:

In a small saucepan, melt the butter. Continue cooking until it smells slightly nutty and is a deep golden brown.

Stir in the sugar, orange juice and half the strawberries. Cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes, or until strawberries have softened and juice has thickened slightly.

In a small bowl, combine water and cornstarch, whisk until smooth. Then add to strawberry sauce.

Bring to a boil and cook, stirring constantly, for about 2 minutes, or until thickened.

Add remaining strawberries and cook for another 5 minutes, stirring frequently.

Remove from heat and stir in Grand Marnier, if desired. Pour over French toast.

For the whipped cream:

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment or in a large bowl with an electric hand mixer, combine heavy cream, confectioners’ sugar and vanilla extract.

Beat until stiff peaks form. Store in refrigerator until ready to use. Best used within 30 minutes!

Assembly the Strawberry Cream French Toast Recipe:

Place French toast slices on a large serving platter or divide among individual plates.

Top with a generous portion of strawberry sauce, then a dollop of whipped cream!

Serve immediately, take away or store in an airtight Lunch Box for another occasion.
